Crank up your cardio!

Crank up your cardio!

Nov 10, 2012

Many people associate cardio exercise with long boring workouts on a stationary piece of cardio equipment. Not only can this lead to the body hitting a plateau but it can also lead to extreme boredom and the temptation to cease the exercise all together. This is extremely unfortunate because there are so many ways to make cardio workouts more entertaining, efficient and effective all at the same time.

Firstly, pump up your playlist!

Take a bunch of high-energy songs that you would normally rock out to in your car and put them into one playlist labeled workouts! You will be amazed at how much faster you’ll run and how much faster your workout will go by. As the old saying goes, time flies when your having fun.

Second, cross train!

If you normally do thirty minutes on one machine then break that up into three ten-minute rotations between the treadmill, elliptical and the stairmaster. This will challenge your body in different ways and keep your body guessing yielding you those results your working so hard for!

Third, High-intensity interval training (HIIT)

Weather you are on the treadmill, elliptical or are just using your bodyweight, high-intensity interval training is the best way to torch calories and speed up your metabolism for the next 24 hours. Also, it is so intense that you don’t need to do it for as long, keeping you from becoming bored!

HIIT training is alternating between extremely intense bursts of activity followed by a short rest or recovery period. For example, on a piece of cardio equipment you can do intense bursts by increasing speed, resistance or both for one minute and then take two minutes to recover. Repeat five to seven times and then cool down.

Fourth, break it up!

According to the American College of Sports Medicine, a thirty-minute workout broken into three lots of ten minutes done at different times throughout the day, is just as effective as doing a straight thirty-minute workout. This is great if you have a busy schedule or are just beginning an exercise routine. If you are advanced however, make the most of each segment and push yourself with high intensity intervals!

Fifth, Just dance!

Dancing requires your entire body to engage. With both your upper body and lower body moving at the same time your heart rate increases and more calories are burned. Try a Zumba class or Zumba DVD. However, if you’re too self-conscious or find the moves difficult and frustrating to follow, go home and play your own favorite tunes and freestyle it up in your living room! Just go crazy! It does not have to be pretty, graceful or premeditated, just do what ever your body feels like doing in the very moment. Make a play list of fast, highly energetic music, with maybe a few recovery songs mixed in, set a timer for thirty minutes, and have a blast dancing yourself thin!

Lastly, Get a buddy!

A good friend can make even waiting online at the DMV more fun. So buddy up! Just make sure this friend is as serious as you are about getting fit (this is crucial). Workout together at home or make dates to go to the gym together, even if you each do your own thing once you get there (you can gossip on the way to and from the gym). Having a friend can also make it less intimidating to try group fitness classes like Zumba, Kickboxing, Yoga or pole dancing!

Cardio exercise machine workouts are great and fun for burning excess body fat and building good cardiovascular health. These exercises not only help to burn body fat fast it will also strengthen your heart and lungs and thus reducing your chances of getting high blood pressure, stroke and heart diseases.
